Earthworm Jim makes his biggest leap from the confines of a cartridge to the shiny side of a CD in this Sega CD exclusive upgrade to his first adventure. New features include a new CD Audio soundtrack, bigger levels, more secrets, more weapons, more animation, more enemies, more wackiness, AAAAAND…more hamsters, of course! www.Mobygames.com

The cart original was excellent, and the CD version actually manages to improve on it. The animation seems a little more fluid and there's almost as much audio humour as visual thanks to the CD soundtrack. The most welcome addition is a password system, allowing you to jump back in where you left off, though it does use annoying symbols instead of straightforward letters. The game is almost entirely platform style, but the scenery and enemies are varied enough to keep you interested. Crazy mid and end of level bosses (such as a snowman in hell) round out the challenge, and though EWJ is not easy going, it never crosses the line into frustrating. New hidden areas, a whole new level and minimal loading times make this is one very good reason to buy a Mega-CD, and having seen what Shiny achieved with this, it's a shame the sequel was only ever released on cartridge. www.sega-mega-cd-library.co.uk
